99 Years In Days
A Hundred Years in Days – 99 Years in Days
A hundred years may be a long time, but 99 is a whole lot of days. It’s the number of days since Sunday February 3, 1924, the day that marked the beginning of the electronic revolution.
Today, we have a microwave oven that uses vacuum tubes, high-end guitar amplifiers eschew transistors and computer monitors use phosphor to display images. But the electronics revolution began 99 years ago this month, when a team of physics students led by Stanford professor Neil Nielsen first discovered that the transistor could actually work.
99 years is a long time, but it wasn’t too long ago that the wheel was replaced by a spinning cylinder and the vacuum tube by an arc discharge electron gun. That’s a big difference, and it’s still a major milestone in technology.
Despite the technological advancements that have been made in the last century, some things never change. For example, even the most advanced computers use some sort of transistor in their core.
But one of the most significant changes was the development of the integrated circuit, a microchip that contains a billion tiny pieces. This paved the way for the development of digital technology and smartphones.
What’s more, it’s also the reason why you can’t make a telephone call from a car or plane without an Internet connection. That’s because the earphones inside these devices are wired into a computer that is connected to a phone line.
The electronics industry has been a very good place to be for a long time, but there are always new advances and innovations that will come along. This is why, a few months after we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the vacuum tube, we will also commemorate the 99th anniversary of the invention of the integrated circuit.
We can’t wait to learn more about the world of electronics in our centennial year, and we’re looking forward to seeing what else comes up in the next century.
