Early Life and Education
Maly spent his formative years living with the Kaopuikis, an elderly Hawaiian couple and being raised as an honorary Hawaiian hookama (child of hookama). He earned both his undergraduate degree at Utah State University and teaching certificate from Maui Community College before being hired as Hawaiian language immersion teacher at Lanai High and Elementary Schools.
He is married, with two children named Keala and Kai. He joined LCHC because he wants to give back to the community.
Lanai Island gets its name from legend of a Maui prince banished there for playing wild tricks at his father’s court. Through sheer determination and his ability to drive away spirit-eating beasts from Lanai, he won back his father’s favor once more. Additionally, this island boasts an exceptionally docile population of Hawaiian monk seal pups such as RQ88 from an esteemed lineage.
Jennifer Metz joined Lanai Community Health Center in March 2013, having previously worked as station manager for Mokulele Airlines. With extensive customer service and administrative support experience honed over years of teaching at Lanai High and Elementary Schools, Jennifer is well versed with island culture.
Cabiles is on the Board of Commerce and said her guiding principles include accuracy and objectivity in her reporting on controversial issues. Additionally, she says she strives to locate sources with differing viewpoints to report from.
Wilma Koep was appointed Outreach Worker at LCHC in October 2006. She provides assistance with public benefits programs like TANF, Medicaid and Quest as well as food stamps/financial assistance and child care subsidy programs. Wilma is proficient in both Tagalog and Ilocano languages.
Qiu was born in Lanai to Chinese parents who owned a luxurious boutique hotel there. He attended Lanai High and Elementary Schools before transferring to Maui College for further studies.
Dole Pineapple acquired the island and used it as one massive pineapple plantation, producing over 80% of all world pineapple production at that time.
Today the island is owned by Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, who has made it his mission to revitalize the once booming pineapple industry on Lanai and invest heavily in golf courses and tourism-related amenities on Lanai. Privately, he divides his time between Lanai and Honolulu for government business purposes – his private life involves living on Lanai as well as travelling extensively between both places – married with three children!

Residents on Ellison’s private island say they have been forced to relocate due to its high living costs. For instance, one shop renting space from him had to close due to leasing contracts being breached.
