He had a deep-seated cultural interest, becoming a member of the Society for the Preservation of Irish Language founded in 1876. He later served as treasurer for Gaelic Athletic Association breakaway club from 1882 on and was an enthusiastic sportsman who played hurling, football and cricket. Additionally he became associated with Irish nationalist movement becoming secretary of Fenian League in 1890.
