David Dunnigan – A Well-Known Public Relations Specialist

David Dunnigan is a well-known public relations specialist in the Dallas area. With more than four decades of experience under his belt, he has worked with an impressive list of clients over this time.

He has also dedicated himself to community involvement, serving on numerous boards and in leadership roles.

Early Life and Education

David Dunnigan was raised on a small farm in Kentucky. She attended a segregated school and, at 13 years old, began writing short features for the local Owensboro Enterprise newspaper.

After moving to Washington, DC in her late teens, Dunnigan began working as a freelance reporter. Eventually she earned a Capitol press pass for the White House and became one of few African American women journalists working in America today.

David had a storied career in journalism and public relations. He served as past president of the Rotary Club of Dallas, North Texas Chapter of the Public Relations Society, Press Club of Dallas, Greater Dallas Community of Churches, YMCA’s International Association of Business Communications, Clean Dallas, Kessler Neighbors United and Mayborn School of Journalism at UNT.

Professional Career

David Dunnigan had an illustrious professional career spanning more than fifty years. He began in journalism before transitioning into public relations, where he played an integral role in numerous high-profile campaigns and initiatives.

He was an active and longtime member of Kessler Park United Methodist Church, serving as Democratic Precinct Chair for four decades. Additionally, he was proud to be a two-time President of the Press Club of Dallas and earned recognition by being inducted into PRSA College of Fellows with recognition of his community service work with Greater Dallas Public Relations Committee. Beyond these philanthropic pursuits, David Dunnigan remained loyal to his family while developing an interest in stamp collecting.

Achievement and Honors

David Dunnigan ’64 was a longtime Dallasite who made an enduring impact on his community. He served on numerous boards and organizations such as Leadership Dallas, North Texas Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), Greater Dallas Planning Council, and Kessler Park United Methodist Church.

He was a member of both the Rotary Clubs of Oak Cliff, where he served as president, and Dallas. Additionally, he received both a PRSA Community Service Award and Paul Harris Fellow designations.

He established the David Dunnigan Public Relations Endowed Scholarship at UNT to assist students majoring in public relations with financial assistance.

Personal Life

Dunnigan was an active member of Kessler Park Neighborhood of Oak Cliff and supported many organizations. She served on the Greater Dallas Planning Council, Dallas Assembly and Oak Cliff Lions Club where she served as president from 1995 to 1996.

Dunnigan had an accomplished journalism career, including stints with The Galveston Daily News and Dallas Morning News. Afterward, she earned a Ph.D in History from the University of Texas at Austin and wrote several books including “The Fascinating Story of Black Kentuckians: Their Heritage and Tradition”.

On April 18, 2006 in Dallas, Mrs. Dunnigan passed away. Survived by her husband of almost 50 years, David Dunnigan; two children; one sister; a brother; her mother-in-law; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren – she will always be remembered by those she left behind.
