David Hankins is a physician and orthopaedic surgeon by profession. He also writes lighthearted speculative fiction with the belief that there aren’t enough humorous stories in the world.

Hankins, who is retiring as executive director of the Louisiana Baptist Convention, has held several leadership roles within the Southern Baptist Convention and is widely respected within his church and among state conventions.

Early Life and Education

Hankins, a native of Wallace, North Carolina and graduate of Duke University, has always had medicine on his mind. His parents – an emergency physician and nurse – instilled this passion throughout him from an early age.

Hankins chose to attend Virginia Tech, the university his grandfather had attended. Unfortunately, his first year proved challenging and ultimately ended with him not returning for a second semester.

Hankins eventually completed his degree and achieved success in his career as an executive and entrepreneur within the electronics industry.

Hankins is a longtime member of Philadelphia Baptist Church in Alexandria and an enthusiastic supporter of the Corps of Cadets. He has contributed towards funding the educations of several of his grandchildren who are currently enrolled at Virginia Tech.

Professional Career

David Hankins has dedicated the majority of his professional career to baseball. He played at the highest levels for renowned coaches such as Tony La Russa, Ron Washington, Trey Hillman and Rob Thomson.

As a baseball coach, he strives to enhance his players’ game through creative teaching methods. Furthermore, he is an enthusiastic supporter of community outreach activities and volunteerism.

Dallas Cowboys have strengthened their defensive line by trading for Hankins, who started 61 games for the Oakland Raiders. He is an experienced run-stopper who will add depth to Dallas’ 4-3 defensive tackle rotation.

Hankins has earned numerous honors and awards for his remarkable achievements in education, business, ministry and the military. Additionally, he is widely known for his dedication to serving US veterans through membership on the board of directors at Methodist Healthcare Foundation.

On June 1st, the Louisiana Baptist Convention (LBC) honored Hankins at Georgia Barnette Conference Center in Covington with a program honoring his integrity, leadership and love. Guests from throughout Louisiana Baptist Convention and Southern Baptist Convention shared stories of how Hankins’ character, leadership and love have affected them personally.

Hankins is an expert in religion, literature and philosophy who draws upon modern literary and philosophical theory to examine history, literature, religion and society. He holds an assistant professor position within the department of religion and philosophy at Appalachian State University.

Personal Life

Hankins and his wife Patty have been members of Philadelphia Baptist Church in Alexandria since 1969. They have three adult sons and five grandchildren.

David has been with Bank of America Merrill Lynch since 2010, serving as vice president and senior relationship manager. With over 35 years of experience in commercial banking, David brings a wealth of knowledge to his role.

His favorite part of the job is working with clients to help them reach their business objectives, no matter how complex. He frequently speaks at local Chamber of Commerce luncheons and has been an active member of Fairhope Rotary Club for over two decades. Additionally, he believes in giving back to the community by volunteering his services at local airport commission, Solon Springs Lions Club, Douglas County 4-H and EAA events.
