David Martynuik
David Martynuik is an Associate Professor of Music at Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he directs their marching band as well as teaching theory, composition and orchestration courses.
His recent collaborations include writing music for Indiana University of Pennsylvania Dance Company’s fall 2019 production of STARGAZER and its 2020 production of The Phantasmagoria of Edgar Allan Poe. Additionally, he provided music to Pittsburgh-based Unseam’d Shakespeare Company.
Early Life and Education
David Martynuik is an Associate Professor of Music at Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he directs the IUP Marching Band and teaches classes in theory, orchestration and music education. Additionally he is an accomplished clarinetist having played with Susquehanna Symphony, St Joseph Pro Musica and Eastern Wind Symphony among others.
He earned both an MM in clarinet performance from the University of Michigan and PhD in music education from Florida State University, and has composed music for dance company productions as well as film. Of his over 50 compositions, his best-known piece is likely his “Song of Memory and Imagery”, featured in several publications as a medley of six different composers’ songs arranged for voice, piano and wind ensemble.
Professional Career
David Martynuik has been teaching theory, orchestration and music education in the Department of Music at Indiana University of Pennsylvania since 2001. Additionally, he directs their marching band.
Martynuik holds both his Bachelor and Master degrees in music performance from College of New Jersey; as well as a Doctorate degree in Music Education from Florida State University.
As a composer, he has composed numerous works for solo instruments and chamber ensembles, which have been performed both domestically and abroad. Most recently he composed music for Indiana University of Pennsylvania Dance Company’s 2019 production of Stargazer as well as their 2020 show of Edgar Allen Poe’s Phantasmagoria of Edgar Allen Poe. Additionally he completed music scores for Pittsburgh-based Unseam’d Shakespeare Company and Shana Simmons Dance Company.
Achievement and Honors
David Martynuik has been teaching theory and orchestration at IUP since 2001, as well as leading its marching band to numerous regional and national performances under his direction. Additionally, he offers classes in composition and conducting. Since receiving this honor at Baylor University – where his thesis received the F. Ray Wilson II Award for Best Thesis in Physical & Life Sciences! –
Martynuik earned his doctorate of music education from Florida State University, studying with James Croft for conducting and composition. Before beginning his doctoral studies, he served as instrumental music director in Harford County, Maryland before pursuing his doctorate degree. His compositions have been performed throughout both North America and Asia; most notably for Indiana University of Pennsylvania Dance Company’s fall 2019 production of Stargazer as well as Galan Piano Trio of Athens, Greece.
Personal Life
David Martynuik is an esteemed composer and director, having led the IUP Marching Band since 2001. Additionally, he teaches courses in music theory and orchestration at IUP as an associate professor of music; additionally as a performer he has appeared with orchestras such as Susquehana Symphony and St Joseph Pro Musica as well as Maryland Winds; most recently his compositions have included clarinet quintets and trombone octets respectively; his academic credentials include bachelor’s in music as well as master’s degrees and doctorates in clarinet performance as well as music education degrees; currently residing in Sioux Falls South Dakota
