Freya Systrom – American Computer Programmer and Entrepreneur
Freya Systrom is the daughter of Kevin Systrom, an acclaimed American computer programmer and entrepreneur best known as co-founder of Instagram – a photo sharing social networking app.
After graduating from Stanford University, he worked on Google products such as Gmail, Calendar, Docs and Spreadsheets before co-founding Instagram in 2010.
He loves travelling and music; photography also holds great interest for him.
Early Life and Education
Systrom was born December 30th 1983 in Holliston Massachusetts. While attending Middlesex School of Concord he developed an interest in computer programming as well as playing and creating Doom 2 levels.
At Stanford University, he studied management science and engineering before joining Sigma Nu fraternity as part of his studies. For his junior year study abroad experience in Florence Italy.
After graduating Stanford, Systrom worked at Google for two years as a product marketer before leaving to join Nextstop, a travel recommendation service, where he developed an app called Burbn that combined location check-ins and photo sharing; venture capitalists Steve Anderson of Baseline Ventures and Marc Andreessen invested $250,000 into Burbn.
At Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts, Systrom found his passion in computer programming. He created programs to prank his friends by hacking into their AOL Instant Messenger accounts and also created levels in Doom 2.
After graduating from Stanford, Systrom worked at Google. He initially managed marketing projects for Gmail and Calendar before transitioning to the mergers & acquisitions division.
At Google, he met Mike Krieger who would become his co-founder of Instagram. They started developing a mobile application which combined location-based social networking and photo sharing, known as Burbn (another reference to his favorite spirit bourbon) before Facebook decided to acquire the company in 2012. Following its renaming as Instagram in 2012, Instagram remains one of the fastest-growing photo sharing apps.
Achievement and Honors
Kevin Systrom is the cofounder of Instagram and was honored as its Founder of the Year at the 6th Annual Crunchies Awards in 2012. In 2015, Kevin and Mike Krieger received joint Webby Breakout Awards. Kevin also appeared on Forbes 30 under 30 list in 2014. Systrom studied under Stanford University’s Mayfield Fellows Program while interning at Odeo Company. Kevin and Nicole Systrom share one daughter named Freya.
Systrom attended Middlesex School, where he became interested in programming while playing Doom 2. Later, he attended Stanford University to earn a degree in management science and engineering. Nicole Schuetz from Stanford was his wife at that time; they have one daughter together named Freya.

Systrom co-founded Instagram with Krieger in 2010. Originally called Burbn, the app allowed users to check-in at locations, earn points when hanging out with friends, and share photos.

Both his parents – Diane (Pels) and Douglas Systrom are executive human resources professionals who serve in executive human resource positions respectively.
He took part in the Mayfield Fellows program at Stanford and interned for Odeo, the company that later became Twitter. Following graduation he went to Google but still continued tinkering with engineering concepts at night.
At a party, Systrom met Mike Krieger, another Stanford graduate working on Burbn, with whom they shared complementary skill sets: Systrom was more of a product visionary while Krieger excelled as an innovative engineer.
