George Bowman was born on May 12, 1852 in Fifeshire, Scotland and immigrated with his parents to New York when he was six months old.

George received his education at Beloit Academy and College before enrolling at Johns Hopkins, majoring in marine biology. After his older brother left to study medicine abroad in Germany, George returned home to Cedarville with his mother where he lived with her until graduation.

He was an accomplished sportsman, enjoying fishing, hunting and hiking. Furthermore, he was a dedicated family man who loved his kids and grandkids dearly.

Following college, he played semi-pro baseball in Greenville and Saltville, Virginia before coaching Washington County schools for many years. In 2008 he and his wife Martha Cassell Bowman relocated to Powell to be near their son Ken and his wife Shannon.

George Bowman was a highly accomplished and esteemed professional, receiving numerous honors for his work, such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Gold Medal for “distinguished service in the power field” and the “Leadership Award” from the American Nuclear Society.

At Westinghouse, he founded and developed the organization responsible for pioneering light water reactor technology used in power generating stations. After joining Bechtel in 1951 as Chief Mechanical Engineer and Division Manager, he continued this groundbreaking work.

He was an enthusiastic supporter of our nation’s veterans and their families, serving two terms as National Chair of the NACO Veterans and Military Services Committee. Through Operation Reveille – a project which provides shelter to homeless veterans – he helped find solutions to these problems.

Personal Life

George Bowman’s family was an integral part of his life. He cherished his wife, children and grandchildren and looked forward to spending time with them.

He was actively involved in his community, serving as chair supervisor for Nore Township and State Fire Warden. Furthermore, he was a member of the Minnesota Timber Producers Association and active participant at Blackduck Chamber of Commerce.

George enjoyed spending his free time outdoors and hunting. He shot numerous deer on his many acres of land.
