Early Life and Education
George Genes was born on October 22, 1903 in Wahoo, Nebraska to Chauncey Elmer Beadle and Hattie Albro.
He attended Wahoo High School, where one of his teachers recognized his aptitude for science and encouraged him to pursue it as a career. After graduation from school, he enrolled in the College of Agriculture at Lincoln, Nebraska and spent a year working with agronomy professor Franklin Keim.
He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University in 1926, followed by a Master of Science from the University of Nebraska. Additionally, he served as a teaching assistant at Cornell University.
Professional Career
George was born into one of Northwest Arkansas’ pioneer families and transformed his small produce business from selling locally and regionally into a multi-division corporation with national and international reach.
George Beadle’s career encompassed the entire transition of genetics from an abstract science to a molecular one. Together with Edward Tatum, he used Neurospora as proof that “one gene makes one protein.”
He developed the first direct genomic sequencing method, leading to the Human Genome Project. He helped establish the Society for Genetic Medicine and later founded the American Society for Gene Therapy (ASGCT).
Achievements and Honors
George is a physician-scientist with clinical expertise in hemostasis and thrombosis, as well as an active basic science laboratory studying the molecular basis of coagulation. Her long-term research projects involve translational and clinical initiatives focused on hemophilia gene therapy research.
He was a founding member of the American Society for Gene Therapy (ASGCT), driven by his dedication and drive to make gene therapy a reality. This passion inspired him to found this Society.
He worked tirelessly to build this organization from the ground up, hosting its inaugural annual meeting and lobbying NIH Institute directors and industry to support its goals. Furthermore, he served as a mentor to many young scientists and physicians in gene therapy research.

George Church is a geneticist who has dedicated his career to unraveling the genetic code of every human on Earth. As director of Synthetic Biology at Harvard Medical School, he oversees research that develops technology for rapidly and inexpensively creating whole genomes – far superior than existing methods.
He relishes spending quality time with his family. Married to Judy Hansen, they have three sons.
Gene is the founder and president of Sioux Falls Cares, a holiday charity that donates thousands of dollars to needy children each year. He serves on the Boards for Hudson Foods and J.B. Hunt Transport Services as well. Gene is an incredibly proud father, husband, South Dakotan who will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
