George Giannoulias

George Giannoulias

George Giannoulias is the younger brother of former Illinois treasurer and Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias, serving as president of their real estate company United Investors. Additionally, he owns Green Street Local restaurant in Chicagoland.

In 2008, he founded the Bright Start scholarship program and Cultivate Illinois Excellence in Agriculture scholarship programs. Additionally, he created the Fallen Heroes Scholarship Program that provides an initial investment of $2,500 towards college savings to children whose parents died while serving in military service.

Early Life and Education

George Giannoulias, a Chicago native and Greek-American family man, was educated at The Latin School of Chicago and later the University of Chicago before attending Boston University to earn his Bachelor’s in Economics.

After college, he joined his father’s community bank as a loan officer. This bank provided financing for commercial real estate development and began lending to nearby businesses.

Giannoulias was elected state treasurer in 2006 and served until 2010, when he narrowly lost to Roland Burris – appointed by Governor Rod Blagojevich to fill Senator Obama’s seat.

Giannoulias served as state treasurer and was responsible for overseeing the Bright Start program, which lost tens of millions of dollars during the 2008 housing market collapse. Critics noted his inaction in rectifying this problem quickly enough.

Professional Career

Giannoulias has since left the state treasurer’s office held positions on nonprofit and public agency boards. Additionally, he worked as a political science instructor and invested in several restaurants.

Giannoulias’ key accomplishment was revitalizing the state’s 529 college savings plan, Bright Start. Unfortunately, one fund he used for this initiative suffered a severe setback, losing more than 35 percent of its value.

Giannoulias initially blamed managers at OppenheimerFunds Inc. for the losses, but new reports raise questions about how he and his staff handled them.

Giannoulias also faces ethical difficulties. He has taken action to promote ethical standards, running ads that accuse Valencia of being unethical and vowing to advocate for tougher ethics laws.

Achievements and Honors

George Giannopoulos has earned an impressive list of recognition in his everyday activities. His accomplishments, from being named President of the Transportation Research and Development Division of the Greek national road transport company (ERRT) to winning an esteemed award for innovation in traffic engineering, are many. He has earned acclaim as both an inspiring public speaker and pioneering force in public policy making. For years, he was consistently ranked among the top 10 highest paid ERRT employees. His contributions to the transport industry have been recognized by government, industry and academic peers alike. A passionate supporter of environmental responsibility, he has demonstrated an uncanny knack for success in any sector by combining technological advancement with social responsibility and some good fortune.

Personal Life

Alexi Giannoulias, the former Illinois state treasurer running for President Obama’s Senate seat, lives in a house adjacent to George Giannoulias’ mansion which was owned by Broadway Bank until it collapsed. George’s real estate venture purchased this home in 2008 and is now trying to sell it according to property records.

Giannoulas has long been an opponent of the bank, which federal regulators shut down in 2010 due to losses including bad loans made to 17 failed commercial projects from New York to Los Angeles. Furthermore, he received campaign contributions from four top officials of the institution – including his two brothers – during that same time.

Giannoulias recently addressed voters in his Illinois secretary of state race, taking aim at Republican Mark Kirk for repeatedly attacking him on his family’s history with Broadway Bank. He noted how Kirk has shifted his views on issues like cap-and-trade anti-pollution legislation and a jobs bill supported by President Obama.

Net Worth

Giannoulias has amassed a substantial net worth through his successful political career. He has amassed an impressive fortune through this work and now lives a contented life with his wife Jo Terlato.

Giannoulias has extensive experience outside the public sector as both a Treasurer and in the private sector. He owns shares in restaurants and serves on multiple boards.

He has been actively engaged in a number of projects and initiatives during his time as treasurer, such as Bright Start and the Fallen Heroes Scholarship Program. Furthermore, he helped launch a securities lending program.

In addition to these initiatives, he has promised to prioritize lobbying reforms during his transition into his new position. He plans to bring the knowledge he’s acquired in the private sector into his government office.
