George Mejicano, MD, is a National Thought Leader in Competency-Based Medical Education
George Mejcano is a pioneer in competency-based medical education and an expert on how education can lead to improvements in patient care. As such, he has published nearly 50 publications on this topic.
He currently serves as senior associate dean for education at Oregon Health & Science University, overseeing all educational initiatives including UME/GME, CME/CPD and graduate studies. Under his direction, many new programs have been launched, quality standards have been raised throughout the institution, and existing ones have been enhanced.
Early Life and Education
George Mejicano was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and raised on a rancheria near Jerome, Arizona. He began his formal education at the University of New Mexico where he earned both a bachelor’s degree in education as well as Spanish.
General Education Board grants enabled him to finish his master’s and doctoral degrees. Additionally, he conducted field studies on rural and Negro education in both the South, as well as Mexico.
He championed educational justice, opposing standardized tests, segregation based on nonproficiency in English and other forms of discrimination against Mexican-American schoolchildren. As a leader in this battle for educational equity, he will always be remembered as one of America’s greatest reformers.
Professional Career
George Mejicano, MD has more than two decades of experience in the medical field. His specialties span both clinical and educational medicine; currently serving as Professor of Medicine within Oregon Health & Science University’s Division of Infectious Diseases.
He is a nationally-recognized expert on competency-based medical education and outcomes assessment, having conducted research to explore how education can lead to improvements in medical practice. Furthermore, he serves as associate dean for continuing professional development and director of the Office of Continuing Professional Development in Medicine and Public Health at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
He received his medical degree from the University of Illinois, followed by postgraduate training at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. He holds board certifications in internal medicine and adult infectious diseases.

George Mejicano has achieved great success in his career and is renowned for his leadership in competency-based medical education. As an esteemed national thought leader in this area, he has authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed literature.
He is currently a professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and senior associate dean for education. Additionally, he has held several national leadership roles such as being on the Board of Directors for Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.
He has received many accolades for his work and is a widely renowned physician in internal medicine. He has been named one of Dane County’s top doctors multiple times and was honored with the Alliant Energy Underkofler Excellence in Teaching Award through the University of Wisconsin System.

George Mejicano is an infectious disease specialist based in Portland, Oregon. He holds a medical degree from the University of Illinois and has completed post-graduate clinical training at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics.
He is an esteemed leader in medical education, having recently been appointed associate dean for education at Carle Illinois College of Medicine. In this role, Mejicano will be accountable for helping the College reach its academic objectives. His impressive list of accomplishments includes launching an innovative curriculum, winning high-profile grants and awards, increasing learners’ diversity, and creating numerous legacy programs. Mejicano is also a nationally renowned expert on competency-based medical education and outcomes assessment; additionally a renowned researcher with nearly 50 articles published on various aspects related to medical education.
