Hildegardt Mirabal Level – Mother of Fred Armisen

Fred Armisen (born Fereydun Robert Armisen on 4 December 1966) is an American actor, comedian, writer and producer best known for his time as an SNL cast member between 2002 and 2013 as well as co-creating and staring in Portlandia on IFC comedy network.

Mirabal sisters–Patria, Minerva, and Maria Teresa–were three middle-class women who stood up against Rafael Trujillo’s brutal dictatorship and played an essential role in galvanizing opposition both at home and internationally against “El Jefe.” Their resistance helped strengthen resistance movement against him both domestically and abroad.

Early Life and Education

Patria Mercedes Mirabal de Gonzalez was a Dominican Republic politician and activist who was executed at the order of Rafael Trujillo Molina as part of an underground movement to oppose him. Together with her sisters Minerva, Belgica Adela “Dede”, and Maria Teresa she formed part of this resistance group against Trujillo’s rule.

Minerva founded the June 14 Revolutionary Movement while her sister Patria supported their activism. Even lending their house for use by the group.

Fred Armisen was the son of Hildegardt Mirabal Level from San Fernando de Apure, Venezuela; and Fereydun Armisen who hails from Soltau, Lower Saxony Germany with Korean roots.

Hildegardt Mirabal Level, half Venezuelan, quarter German and quarter Korean by heritage is the mother of American actor and comedian Fred Armisen who made his mark as part of Saturday Night Live from 2002 until 2013 before currently appearing on Portlandia. Hildegardt met Fereydun Herbert Armisen at University of Southern Mississippi before migrating first to New York, then Brazil before finally returning home to Valley Stream, New York where they currently reside.

Hildegardt is also a professional singer. She performs in various musical genres and has performed all over the world, while touring as part of an orchestra. Hildegardt has long advocated for feminist and women’s rights issues through writing articles and books about these subjects.

Patria Mercedes Mirabal Reyes, commonly known by her nickname ‘Las Mariposas’ and her sisters became icons of democratic and feminist resistance against Trujillo’s dictatorship and secret police who were responsible for repressing and murdering thousands. Through their activism they helped end his regime.

The United Nations honored the Mirabal Sisters by designating 25 November as International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, honoring them and continuing their activism today as violence against women remains prevalent globally.

Fred Armisen was raised by Hildegardt Mirabal Level from San Fernando de Apure, Venezuela and Fereydun Herbert Armisen from Germany. His childhood years were spent in Valley Stream, New York where he attended high school alongside Jim Breuer from “Saturday Night Live”. Additionally he is an actor/ musician playing drums with The Rhythm Kings band.
