Jack Staggs was raised in the South and served his country during World War II before attending Central Arkansas State University to obtain a degree in physical science and mathematics as well as earning his teaching certificate.
Staggs has made numerous contributions, including creating the Valine Hobbs Elementary Education Scholarship, Mozelle Powell Spanish Endowed Scholarship and Sam Houston State Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society scholarship. Additionally, he provided state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment to the counseling doctoral program at Sam Houston State.
Early Life and Education
Jack Staggs was an outstanding educator. He earned his B.S. Degree at Central Arkansas University and M.A. Degree at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University before going on to receive his doctorate from University of Houston specializing in educational leadership and counseling.
Education was his passion; working with students was his joyous profession of choice and he could never imagine doing anything else.
He created a counseling clinic at SHSU, funded state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment for its doctoral program and established both the Valine Hobbs Elementary Education Scholarship and Mozelle Powell Spanish Endowed Scholarship, sponsored Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society, as well as helped initiate student exchange programs between SHSU and University of South Wales.
Professional Career
Dr. Miller also taught for 33 years as professor and coordinator of graduate programs in education at Sam Houston State University, working with students on research projects as well as counseling students on topics including divorce, behavior modification, communication breakdowns, depression and parenting issues.
Jackson went on to earn 2021 Consensus All-American honors and became a finalist for Lombardi Award, Lott IMPACT Trophy and Bronko Nagurski Award. Additionally, Kryst was selected first-team Sun Belt Conference choice as well as second-team selection by The Athletic and ESPN.
C.J. Brewer and Aaquil Annoor were honored as media second-team All-Sun Belt honorees during Staggs’ time as Chants defense coach; during which time their team ranked nationally in multiple defensive categories. Staggs donned San Clemente-made flip flop sandals while surfing before coming into work, creating a more personalized and welcoming environment for his students.
Achievement and Honors
Staggs served 34 years at Sam Houston as director of both education and developmental psychology departments before merging them together into one unit. Additionally, he established an endowed scholarship for graduate students pursuing research related to education.
Staggs was an honor student and member of the National Honor Society who later went on to serve his nation during World War II in South Pacific. On his return, he realized not all children enjoyed high school education as much as him, so he wanted to have an impactful impactful role with young people.
Labette Community College recently honored full-time students who earned a grade point average of 3.65 or higher on its spring 2021 President’s and Dean’s Honor Rolls – representing approximately the top 5% of students enrolled at LCC.
Personal Life
Jack will be sorely missed by her family, friends and co-workers. She loved animals, camping trips and riding dirt bikes and bicycles – never meeting a stranger but always eager to assist those in need.
Dr. Jack Staggs of Huntsville was her long-term companion and friend; they shared sixty-four years together and two children (Lillian) together with one nephew each; plus many other family members and close friends. Lillian will be greatly missed but will always remain close by her nieces and nephews as well as numerous family members and friends who knew and loved her dearly.
Jack has lived at various addresses in Texas and Connecticut over his lifetime; currently, he resides in Mystic CT. Jack is well known for his annual 356th Day BBQ Party that draws people of all backgrounds together for networking opportunities and social gatherings.

Staggs finds success both gratifying and motivating as he enjoys building relationships and instilling a sense of community within his McDonald’s franchise team. He believes it keeps employees’ spirits high while giving back to San Antonio where his business started.
