Jack Underwood is an author, poet, and senior lecturer in creative writing at University College Cork in Ireland. His focus lies on poetry as an artform and its relationship to an ever-evolving world.
He recently had two short films, Half Awake and Robert, selected for UCF B.F.A Film program’s showcase. Additionally, he wrote Happiness book of poems.
Early Life and Education
In his later years, he participated in numerous church services and pageants aimed at engaging youth into Christianity. Additionally, he served on the boards of directors for multiple local institutions as well as being actively involved with Syracuse Rotary Club and writing a book about local history.
Born in Norwich in 1984, he studied at Norwich School of Art and Design before going on to complete a PhD in Creative Writing at Goldsmiths. His poems have been published in solo pamphlets Solo for Mascha Voice/Tenuous Rooms as well as Faber & Faber’s debut collection Happiness published in 2015. Additionally he co-edits Stop Sharpening Your Knives anthologies while reviewing for Poetry London as well as winning an Eric Gregory award and being honored as Faber New Poet award recipient!
Professional Career
Underwood is an acclaimed sports journalist who has covered college football and other sports for many years at “Sports Illustrated.” Additionally, he has written several books including one about legendary Alabama coach Bear Bryant’s life.
Kevin Spacey portrays Senator McCaskill on Netflix series House of Cards as a politician who rises to power through treachery and deception, garnering criticism. His character exemplifies these characteristics.
William is actively engaged with London poetry culture as an English and Creative Writing lecturer at Goldsmiths, tutor at The Poetry School, and co-editor (alongside Sam Riviere) of Stop/Sharpening/Your/Knives anthology series. Underwood’s poetic lyricism treads close to whimsy and irony, yet his poems display an optimistic outlook about participation possible through poetry – believing in empathetic social discourse he hopes to broaden poetic logic to include math, science, religion or ceremonial practices as part of its poetry logic.
