John Borst is a great example of how hard work, perseverance and determination can lead to success. He has accomplished so much in his career and he is still going strong.

He’s a goal-oriented person, and that’s something Sherando coach Pepper Martin said makes him an even better wrestler. He has a soft spot for youth wrestlers, too.

Early Life and Education

john borst was born in Schoharie County, New York, and was the sixth of 15 children. He was proud of his family and could trace his roots back four generations.

A lifelong educator, his professional career took him into both the public and private sectors. Throughout the years he held a variety of positions, including department head, curriculum coordinator and principal.

he served in Ontario for 36 years, in both English and French language school boards. He retired as director of education for the legacy Dryden Board of Education in 1996.

Professional Career

John Borst began his professional career as a lawyer. He moved from Schoharie County, New York to Luray, Virginia, in 1847 and opened a practice.

He and his wife, Isabella C. Almond, had six children. They accumulated significant property and popularity in the antebellum community.

In the late 1850s, he built a home in Luray, called “Aventine,” on the top of a hill on the west side of town. All of the lumber used to build the house came from the Blue Ridge Mountains.

In 1998, she was the candidate for the Democrats 66 and succeeded Hans van Mierlo as Lijsttrekker. She later served as Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport in the Cabinet Kok I. She was also a professor in medical ethics at the University of Amsterdam.

Achievements and Honors

Borst is one of Sherando’s all-time leaders in wins (211) and pins (164), winning state championships at Group 4A 170-pound and 195-pounds as a sophomore. He also took home a pair of All-American honors, including a national title at Escape the Rock in Virginia Beach and a second-place finish at freestyle nationals in Fargo, N.D.

He’s a three-time state champion and a three-time captain of the Sherando wrestling team. He’s also the first area wrestler to win the coveted Beast of the East title in Newark, Del., a feat that he accomplished despite losing close to 10 pounds of body fat and having his fever spike to 101 degrees during the tournament. He’s a college scholar all-American and was named a 3A-4A student athlete of the year by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

John Borst’s life was a series of moments that most wrestlers only dreamed about. The sweat, blood, cardio and weight training; traveling to distance parts of the country for tournaments; pinning his way to the state final in one of the best postseason runs you’ll ever see — all of it capped by taking home a group 4A 170-pound state title for Sherando.

It’s a story about goals, hard work, and the power of teamwork. It’s the story of a young man with special needs who, through a program called Special Olympics, has become a champion and a role model for others.

He was born with sensory processing disorder, a condition that affects the brain’s ability to process information and stimuli through the senses. But distance running has come quite naturally to him, a fact his grandmother, who passed away before he began running, was absolutely delighted with when she saw him compete in races.
