John DeSoto – Inducted Into the AMA Hall of Fame Tomorrow
A person often faces a moment that defines their life. For John DeSoto, that moment came one fateful day in 1993.
As a lawyer, he has handled medical malpractice, serious injury and wrongful death cases throughout Texas and Arkansas. He has also been the recipient of several awards and honors.
Early Life and Education

Professional Career
John DeSoto was a professional motocross racer who was well known for his competitiveness. He traveled to the mainland to pursue his dream and became one of the early pioneers of American motocross.
During his career he rode for brands Montesa, CZ and Suzuki. He also competed in Europe.
As a pro he won two 250 national motocross championships and represented the United States in the Motocross Des Nations. He was also the first American to ride the 250cc World GP circuit in Europe.
He later returned to Hawaii where he has been involved in vintage motocross racing for several decades. He is a member of the AMA Hall of Fame and the Hawaiian Sports Hall of Fame. He has also been elected to the Honolulu city council.

As an accomplished motocross racer and an early pioneer of American dirt bike racing, John “The Flyin’ Hawaiian” Desoto had a long and successful career. He was inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame tomorrow.
A former city councilman, DeSoto was a leader in the emergence of the Honolulu motorsports scene. He also helped lead the establishment of the Hawai’i Motorcycle Association.
His defining moment was one tragic day in 1993 when he lost his son to suicide. It prompted DeSoto to focus on the things that mattered most to him, his children.

DeSoto was a very busy man, but he was also a loving husband and father. He was married to Juanita Gantzer in 1944 and together they have two sons.
A lifelong collector and Hawaiian historian, he is the collections manager at the Bishop Museum Archives. He surrounds himself with stacks of personal and political possessions from Hawaiian Ali’i as well as a variety of other materials representing Hawaii’s cultural and natural history.
In a similar vein, John de Soto is also an avid collector of the history of Florida. His interest in the region dates back to the early 1530s, when he accompanied Francisco Pizarro (1471-1541) on his conquest of Peru.
He later moved to Hawaii, where he became a motocross racer, earning the nickname “The Flying Hawaiian.” In 1975 he retired from competition and moved back to Honolulu where he was elected to the city council.
