John Gartland

John Gartland is an English novelist, playwright, poet and university lecturer currently residing in Bangkok, Thailand.

Under his leadership as head coach of Indiana State’s women’s track and field team, the Sycamores have produced multiple national qualifiers and All-Americans.

He has also helped many student-athletes achieve high academic standing during his tenure as a coach. A few athletes have earned the NCAA Public Recognition Award.

As part of his efforts to enhance the orthopaedic department, he reorganized a research laboratory that had been acquired 10 years prior but wasn’t being utilized effectively. To this end, he recruited Peter Frasca, Ph.D. – who had an expert degree in biophysics and an interest in bone as a tissue – and recruited several research assistants as well.

John Gartland has achieved great success throughout his career, earning numerous accolades along the way. In 2007, he was named Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year and later that year received the Jimmy Carnes Award at USTFCCCA Convention.

He has earned USATF’s Ron Buss Award, honoring coaches whose career has been marked by leadership roles, teaching excellence, strengthening curriculums and providing advice to fellow coaches.

Gartland is a renowned author, having published multiple books of poetry.
