John Hallquist

John Hallquist (BS ’70, Industrial Engineering) has been an icon in the engineering community for over four decades. Throughout his career, he has earned numerous honors and awards.

At Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, he created the large finite element software program DYNA 3D. This program accurately modeled collisions and explosions.

Early Life and Education

Many people mistakenly assume that learning begins when children enter school, but children actually acquire much knowledge throughout their childhood. While they learn at home from their parents, they also require active stimulation and interaction with others outside the family for optimal development.

Professional Career

John Hallquist earned his Bachelor’s in Industrial Engineering, magna cum laude, from Western Michigan University; followed by Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University. Following this he spent fifteen years at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory working on mathematical models that predict bomb effectiveness.

Hallquist created LLNL DYNA 3D, an expansive finite element program to simulate collisions and explosions. This software code has since been adopted by numerous industries for crash simulations and metal forming simulations.

Hallquist left LLNL in 1987 to found Livermore Software Technology Corporation (LSTC). This firm produces world-class computational mechanics software and offers support to engineers around the globe who use its products.

Achievements and Honors

John Hallquist has earned a number of accolades throughout his career, such as the Applied Mechanics Division Award from The American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Who’s Who.

He holds a degree from Western Michigan University and a PhD in mechanical engineering and engineering mechanics from Michigan Technological University. In addition, he has served on multiple committees and made significant contributions to both professional and academic engineering communities.

Hallquist is currently the president of Livermore Software Technology Corporation, a company that develops finite element method-based software tools for crash simulation and metal forming. He holds nineteen industry patents as either an inventor or co-inventor.

Personal Life

John Hallquist, CEO of Vermont Electric Cooperative, has dedicated himself to finding ways to make the electricity grid more sustainable. He believes that improving grid efficiency can help combat social ills such as climate change and rural poverty.

But he also acknowledges that the public’s focus on his gender identity has often overlooked his practical policy ideas.

That is why he decided to share his secret. This revelation was captured in the documentary Denial, directed by his son Derek.

Christine Hallquist is expected to win the Democratic primary in November and become history as the first transgender nominee for a major political party. She’s widely expected to defeat incumbent Republican governor Phil Scott.
