Born Janis Eddy Fink in 1951, john janis lived with her family in the town of Port Arthur, Texas. Her parents, Victor and Pearl Fink, ran a chicken farm, and the young singer learned to sing by listening to her mother’s recordings of Bessie Smith, Lead Belly, and Ma Rainey.

The International Folk Music Awards will recognize Janis Ian, Josh White, and John Prine-founded Oh Boy Records with the Elaine Weissman Lifetime Achievement Award on February 1 in Kansas City. The ceremony will be live and broadcast online.
