John LaNoue has dedicated himself to serving Texas Baptists by meeting human needs for over four decades. He and his family have traveled the world, aiding those affected by natural disasters.

He has built the first mobile medical unit for Texas Baptists along the Rio Grande. Additionally, he led one of the first American Christian teams to enter Iran after its Islamic Revolution.

Early Life and Education

John Lanoue was born and raised in Texas, earning his education at Stephen F. Austin State University, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary.

In 1997, he spent three months in North Korea aiding those affected by disasters. Subsequently, he published a book entitled Walking with God in Broken Places that detailed his experiences.

He credits his travels as a learning experience that forced him out of his Baptist comfort zone and into working in multiple cultures and denominations. Through this exposure to different faiths, he said, he learned many valuable lessons about God.

On July 6, 2022, California authorities obtained a warrant for Lanoue’s arrest. He was taken into custody and is currently held at Washoe County jail awaiting extradition back to their state, according to authorities.

Professional Career

John Lanoue is one of the most enduring icons in University of San Diego athletics, serving as head coach for over four decades. During that time, his teams achieved 843 victories, 16 winning seasons and four NCAA regional appearances while earning him both WCC Coach of the Year awards in 1993 and 1998.

His most remarkable title was awarded a lifetime achievement award from USD in 2014. Additionally, he became the only coach in school history to have their name immortalized on a wall of fame. He has been inducted into both the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and San Diego City College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004 – testament to his successful legacy that continues today for the Toreros.

As senior pastor of a Baptist church in Mesquite, Texas, John Lanoue served as an international missionary for decades. He led disaster relief teams to places few Americans had ever gone before – such as North Korea and Iran.

Nothing in his life will ever erase the pain of 1982 when Anne Pham, five, was kidnapped, sexually assaulted and strangled on her way to kindergarten in Seaside, California.

Two days after her body was discovered in Fort Ord, about a mile from her home, investigators reopened the case with DNA testing that hadn’t been available before due to a grant. With this technology they were able to positively identify Lanoue as the suspect.

Years later, Lanoue was arrested for her murder after Monterey County prosecutors reopened the case using new DNA technology in 2020 to examine old evidence.
