Early Life and Education
For more than nine years, John Sherer served as the president of Davidson College. During this time, he was also instrumental in the creation of the institution’s music programs. He was responsible for a total of eighty musical events annually.
After leaving Davidson, Sherer remained in Virginia to serve as pastor of a church in Spring Hill. During his time there, he was introduced to the work of Grand Master Richard A. Dickerscheid, who emphasized using the tools of the craft. His work on Masonic symbols is still valuable to this day.
Sherer’s early life and education were rich in classical music. From an early age, he received a wealth of awards for his musical skills. In high school, he participated in the chorus program, studied piano and flute, and began performing with the Santa Fe Opera.
The professional career of John Sherer has taken him from the field of journalism to the world of music. His career began with Look magazine where he worked as a staff photographer until 1972.
Since 1996, Sherer has served as the Director of Music at the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago. He has led several choir tours throughout the United States and the world.
Sherer earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and two master’s degrees at Yale University. He also studied conducting with John Leman.

University of North Carolina Press has had a distinguished history, and its current director, John W. W. Sherer, is no exception. In 2012, he was appointed the seventh director in the long line of leaders that have overseen the publication of this University Press.
Founded in 1922, UNC Press is one of the oldest university presses in the country. It has earned several major foundation grants and is renowned for its books. Recently, the press was awarded a $1 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support its monograph publishing program. This is in addition to a $998,000 grant it received from the Mellon Foundation last year.
The Press’s accomplishments are numerous and include winning a Bancroft Prize, the Anisfield-Wolf Award, and the Samuel Eliot Morison Prize. Its publications have garnered many accolades, including two New York Times bestsellers.
There are many aspects to John Sherer’s personal life. He is a writer based in Brooklyn. His writings have been published in The Point, Botticelli Magazine, and Hot Metal Bridge. In addition to his work at the University of North Carolina Press, he has given back to the community through his work with the Gulf Coast and the Music Institute of Chicago.
Sherer is a jack of all trades. As a member of the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, he has been in charge of the organ and managing an active concert series. He also oversees the partnership between the church and the Music Institute of Chicago. Aside from his work at the church, he has led several choir tours throughout the United States. John Sherer is an American writer based in Brooklyn. He is known for his work on television shows such as Law and Order: Special Victim Units (2003-2010). Additionally, he has played many different characters in movies like The Simpsons, Bright Lights of the Second City, and Songs of Praise. Despite his fame, he hasn’t been given a promotion in his career.
However, his love for music has earned him several achievements. In 1996, he became the organist of the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago. As an organist, Sherer led several choir tours around the country. Since then, he has been involved in musical missions. Some of his missions include the Climate Reality Project and the Women’s Image Network.
After completing a double Master’s degree at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, he received his Doctor of Musical Arts at Julliard School in New York.
