Early Life and Education
In 1996, John Toffey stumbled across a collection of letters written by his father during World War II. Motivated, he began meticulously researching his father’s time abroad.
John’s father sent his brother Bill E. a letter on April 14, 1865 which contained a single round ball (.44 caliber) which was shot into the window of Lincoln Hospital in Washington D.C.
John Toffey began his life in Pawling, Dutchess County, New York as a young man. Later he relocated to Jersey City and worked as both a policeman and sheriff for Hudson County.
Professional Career
A University of Massachusetts senior has decided to forgo his final season of collegiate hockey in order to pursue a professional hockey career. He has received interest from more than 50 schools, including Florida, Georgia Tech and Boston College for baseball; Iowa, Harvard and Notre Dame for hockey.
Toffey has been a top prospect in his home state of Massachusetts for the last several seasons. He boasts an excellent batting eye and the ability to hit with authority, though his power is inconsistent.

John Toffey was an English teacher and coach who loved language, music, and tradition. He and his wife Irene traveled widely, particularly enjoying the British Isles and Italy.
John had a knack for writing, particularly about his father’s service in World War II. Motivated by letters his dad had sent home during battle, John began researching them and crafting a memoir detailing his dad’s memories of battle.
He had been a longtime resident of Great Barrington, Mass., where he taught English and coached baseball for many years. As an active member of his community, he belonged to numerous local organizations. Most importantly, he loved spending time with his 13 grandchildren; unfortunately he was predeceased by his beloved Irene.
