Noah Looney
Looney’s long arms – measured at 7’4 – have proven invaluable during the Warriors’ second-round series against Memphis. Additionally, his versatile game makes him an asset as he can play both small forward and center positions on an NBA court.
Before joining Idaho State, Looney enjoyed immense success at Point Loma Nazarene as both a Division II and NAIA coach, leading the Falcons to three straight GNAC tournament championships while making each season’s NCAA West regional appearances.
Early Life and Education
Noah (Hebrew:,nvh) was an antediluvian patriarch and author of the biblical account of the Flood. In scripture he is described as righteous man and his story is well-known worldwide.
Rabbis held that Noah represented an ideal of perfect righteousness during his generation; yet his building of the Ark with his family was often used as justification for slavery and racism in medieval Europe.
Looney is an outstanding rebounder with an athletic, strong frame and long arms who has shown promising signs of developing an effective face-up game. While he could use some additional muscle development, Looney could develop into an outstanding NBA four-man who also boasts a promising three-point stroke.
Professional Career
Looney is a long and lean big man with an incredible 7’4 wingspan and impressive standing reach who can defend all five positions on the court. Last season, his presence helped the Warriors outscore opponents +10.6 points per 100 possessions to their detriment by 2.9.
He proved his value during the playoffs by stopping James Harden from driving to the basket and contesting his jump shots without fouling out. Furthermore, his offensive intelligence allowed him to excel as both a screener and willing passer.
As Aron Baynes, Joakim Noah and Cristiano Felicio prepare to hit free agency this summer, Golden State must decide whether or not they wish to retain Looney on a multiyear contract agreement.
Achievement and Honors
Looney has garnered numerous honors during his career. As a freshman he earned All-Rookie Team recognition from NCAA, then All-American recognition, before being selected first-team All-Big West selection and key contributor to Golden State during 2017 Western Conference Finals when they swept Portland Trail Blazers; his 12 points and 9 rebounds contributed heavily towards their victory.
Before becoming head coach at Point Loma, Looney held this same role at Seattle Pacific University for seven seasons, during which time he won multiple league championships and advanced to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments while also recruiting and developing Daulton Hommes into an All-Division II Player of the Year winner.
Personal Life
Looney was not only an outstanding basketball player but an acclaimed coach as well. As Point Loma Sea Lions head coach he led them to 31 wins in seven years – setting a school record and appearing at three consecutive NCAA Division II tournaments.
He is a committed humanitarian who has tirelessly worked to assist children in need, in addition to being involved with numerous charitable organizations.
Steve Kerr could opt to start Looney over Andrew Bogut this season. Looney has been an instrumental component in Golden State’s championship run over the last two years and even helped defeat Houston in the Western Conference Finals; however, due to a strained left hip injury he may miss four to six months due to playing time restrictions.
