Ralph John
General Ralph served as commandant of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at Fort McNair, Washington, D.C., from 1979 to 1985.
During his military career, General Ralph was awarded several military decorations and honors. These include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal and Meritorious Service Medal.
Early Life and Education
Ralph grew up in a family of African Americans in the Jim Crow codes and practices of white supremacist racial segregation. He suffered from a number of traumatic experiences in his early life, including the loss of his father at the age of three.
He went on to study mechanical engineering at Colorado State University and worked at Rocky Flats Nuclear Plant for several years. He married Jean Booth and they had two children, Linda and John.
He was a strong supporter of the conservation movement and fought for the protection of Pennsylvania’s water, wildlife and the environment.
