Steven Trent – Businessman and Environmental Activist
Steve Trent is a prominent businessman and environmentalist. As founder and executive director of Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF), he leads its efforts in advocating for environmental rights.
Over 30 countries he has conducted field research and undercover investigations, trained environmental advocates and led media campaigns; also providing consultation to both Congress and European Parliament.
Early Life and Education
Steve Trent was a native of Springfield and graduate of Springfield High School who dedicated 33 years at Killian Construction Company of Springfield as Safety Director.
Since 1999, Steve has been actively engaged with WildAid as President and Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF). At WildAid and EJF he has advocated for positive changes cost-effectively and sustainably on issues including illegal wildlife parts trade, hazardous chemical pesticides, illegal logging/piracy fishing as well as pirate fishing of natural resources.
He founded the Jean and Eric Franklin Bursary at Trent University in 2012 in memory of his parents, supporting students enrolled in Geography, Environmental & Resource Science/Studies programs. Additionally, he operates as a one-man band who can play his sparkly gold Gretsch guitar while singing in styles spanning rockabilly, roots rock, country blues.
Professional Career
Steven Trent held a lab fellow position with Battelle’s fluid and thermal engineering department, developing internationally acclaimed computational fluid dynamics software TEMPEST while leading modeling efforts on various technical projects at Hanford Nuclear Research Center.
Investigator and media campaigner in over 15 countries, his focus was marine issues, the illegal trade in ozone-depleting substances, orangutan conservation and environmental governance. He delivered presentations about these subjects before Congress, European Parliament and Commission as well as various international conventions.
Before joining Trent in 2012, he held senior roles at Brock University such as vice-president finance and administration and deputy minister of labour. Additionally, he earned both his undergraduate degree in electrical and electronic engineering as well as an MBA.
Achievement and Honors
Trent has made significant donations to Trent University that have had a profound effect on its development. He was key in creating Arthur, the student newspaper, and Trent Radio; also helping create several campus buildings through support donations.
Garry Niver Award – an honor bestowed upon a 49er who displays professionalism and cooperation with media coverage – has been bestowed on him. This prize honors longtime San Francisco sports beat writer Garry Niver who covered their team.
Trent is part of the group Small Town and performs at country music hot spots across the Midwest. He enjoys watching Csi, Lost, Heroes, Numb3rs and The Unit as well as rock music – playing guitar and singing are his hobbies in his free time.
Personal Life
He has led campaigns, investigations and training on issues spanning marine conservation to illegal trade in wildlife parts, human trafficking, illegal logging, orangutan protection and environmental governance. Co-founder of WildAid and EJF (where he served as President), his activism has had far reaching effects.
He is an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has served in both Oakland California and Mt. Timpanogos Utah Temples. In addition, he volunteers his services indexing over 15,000 family history names; having already collected 400+ of his own ancestors.
Personal hobbies for him include hiking and camping. He enjoys listening to rock music and watching popular TV series such as CSI, House, Lost and Numb3rs; in his free time he also likes playing with his children.
